About You
Name: Roy Age: 17 Gender: Girl. RP Sample:
Samden had first reclined himself upon entering the room, grateful for a chance to sit after spending the hours since waking that morning on his feet. Familiar with the layout of his living room and kitchen, Sofia had immediately busied herself in making them some tea, chattering amiably away as she worked in the room next door.
Today was the end of a long hard week for Sam, his nerves were strung out and he was beginning to grow tired from the stress of five days' straight of morning and midnight watches. Someone had thought it a capital idea to push him up the ranks, so not only was he doubling on watches, but he was put in charge of the incoming guard trainees末rough, street-smart young bucks that were worse for discipline than squires. Sofia's banter carried lightly to him, and he was almost grateful for the easing noise, but just as soon as he was beginning to relax, she began to carry things in a different direction.
He took his tea from her with a level, stern, very Sam-ly gaze. While she hovered, expecting him to respond, he made a point to remain silent and blow slow tufts of breath over his steaming mug of tea. After it was cool enough for a sip, the former knight pushed himself further back against the cushions of the sofa with a restrained sigh.
His actions seemed to put Sofia out of joint. Where she normally would have waited for him to say something, she grew impatient and threw up her hands. Sam's brows lifted, then furrowed again, the skin pinching at his temples and creases forming at the corners of his eyes. Frowning, he shifted in his place and listened as Sofia pounced another statement on him.
She continued to do so, until Sam's voice rose mildly to check her: "Sofia."
Having been married once, the man should have known better. It would seem that that served only to goad her on. She whirled on him and with that familiar tick appearing in his jaw, he laid his tea on the coffee table before him. He minded that he did not truly wish to be angry with her, but nor was he a man who enjoyed being preached to about what he should do with his life. His stubbornness, for one, would not allow for it.
He could have responded rationally and evenly to her antagonizing, but her last remark brought him forward in actual anger. The phrasing of her words had implied something he had never expected to hear her say末dare to say. His impression that she was unpreturbed about his condition crumbled and became a disillusion, a falseness.
Sam's tone was tight when he spoke. Any other man, perhaps would have allowed his voice to raise, but Sam was the sort to keep it quiet. For some, it was the quiet anger contained in his voice that reached them better than any shout or curse would have.
"So," he pressed, "not only are you accusing me of obstinacy and cowardice, but I am less a man because I am forced to live this life as I do? I am less your friend, less a person to you because I do so? That so long as I live as this man, live under his skin, that I will be insuffrable to you? If that is how you feel, then I believe it would be much easier on the both of us if you left and I not speak with you again."
Before Sofia could make a response to that, he lifted a hand sharply. "But you will not have that, will you? You'll lose Samden, just like you did before, and you won't have that as long as you can prevent it. But *I* will not stand for a friendship where I cannot be accepted or appreciated as I am, Sofia."
/ Lille post /
For once, Sam's response was quick.
He stayed put while Sofia paced in and out of the living room, her arms crossed. Clearly what he had said moments before had given her something to think over and therefore check her words before she said them. Her disrespect for his turn to have argue out his side of their spat had irritated him only a little further than things she had said before it. This irritation dissolved when Sofia, too, made a point that the former knight had to consider.
She paced into the kitchen, out again, stood before the window, whirled around末Sam lost track of all the motion, it was all in a flurry to him. When she sought his eyes, however, he met hers calmly. By now, he had reclined back against the cushions, and his tea had returned to his grasp. His expression remained neutral, the selfsame, frustratingly impassive stare Sam possessed末only in a different face.
As her share of words wound to an end, her hasty accusations made Sam's demeanor tense. Her last remark brought him forward and he thrust his mug back onto the coffee table, a degree shy of slamming it. Rising to his feet, he paced toward and past her to the window, throwing up the sash forcefully to allow in a fresh breeze. Leaning over the sill, his jaw muscles taut and hard, his teeth gritted and his chin jutting forward, he slowly shook his head.
"On some sort of -string-," he uttered darkly, his words almost lost to the noise of Priphia Square below. Tilting his head to look at her, he demanded in a voice like iron, "Tell me, Sofia, when I have controlled you thus. When have I kept you from acting on your own, precious free will? When have I not understood your independence, when have I not allowed you to come and go in my life as you pleased?"
Your Character
Name: Cassius "Cass" James Bentley Age: 30 Gender: Male Income Tier: III Profession: Liquor store manager, would-be actor Celebrity: Johnny Depp
Personality:
Cass likes to think of himself as pretty easy going, though he's not ashamed to admit that he can be a real ass. Most of the time it's either because he's bitter about his lot in life or that someone "stupid" has irritated him. Working at a liquor store, too, has given him firsthand training in being a real ass: he gets to know people by their booze, judges them by their booze, jokes about them and their booze末really, what do you expect? The customers he deals with aren't much better than him, and a good portion of them are testy alcoholics who can barely speak Engilsh that isn't permanently slurred.
Although friendly and deceivingly open, Cass is actually pretty guarded about his feelings and personal life. Since his childhood, he's always been a crafty liar末the only person he didn't fool was his mother. His sisters, happily, were delayed on picking that up, so whenever Cass had pulled a mean prank on them they went running to their father, who was incompetent at determining whether his son was lying or not. If either of them ran to his mother though, Cass either ran like hell or tried to devise the smoothest lie ever to save his hide from a smart whupping.
Nowadays, he lies for three reasons: one being to keep the people who know him on their toes, a second being he's trying to avoid being with someone or doing something, and the third being that he just wants to keep himself relatively ambiguous. A lot of the people who claim to know him very well in actuality don't末he makes sure of that so that they don't feel disappointed about him.
Interestingly, a lot of people seem to forgive or forget his penchant for lying. Or perhaps its his skill as an actor and the seamless delivery of his lies that they don't have qualms in believing them. Cass likes the sense of security this gives him末it's like a little shell.
When it comes to his few friends that he's allowed to get close, his lying is merely a fact of his personality and they know it. He doesn't break his lying habit for them, mainly because he figures that if they've gotten to know him this well, they'll recognize a poor lie when they hear him say it.
Cass has two characteristics that remain safely hidden: that he has a strong sense of responsibility and that he can dedicate himself wholly to something when he wants to. Cass feels intense responsibility and affection for his daughter; she's the reason he has kept his job at the liquor store the past five years instead of scraping off a living on acting jigs.
Appearance:

Complexionwise, a little Italian blood back somewhere has lent Cass a slightly swarthy look with rich brown hair and dark, practically black eyes. That combined with his high cheekbones, curiously delicate features and winning smile has always made him a favourite with women末something he certainly took advantage of in the past. As far as height goes, Cass passes by as average; neither tall nor wanting in a few more inches.
Despite having a relatively casual and eccentric taste in how he presents himself, Cass has made a habit of keeping his appearance fresh and tidy. The unshaven and unshowered alcoholics that stop by the liquor store have only increased his desire to appear neat, albeit fashionably unkempt. Cass's body is also smattered with tattoos, most of which are subtle works of art or happy memories. These he generally keeps covered, again out of his notion of appearing decent, but the few on his arms he displays openly and unabashedly.
He's always been scrawny, and being an avid runner has never helped improve his bulk. His high metabolism has always leant him a healthy appetite that doesn't quite match up with his sparse frame. In some places, especially his joints, he is notedly knobby and angular末but never skeletal. Aside from his elbows, wrists and knees, Cass likes to remark that he's nothing but cuddly as a teddy bear under his shirt.
History:
Cass had an unremarkable childhood and adolescence, growing up in a New Jersey smalltown before making "the Move" to New York City. He had plans on going to college and studying theatre or directing末he wasn't sure which, he just figured he'd have more of a chance as an actor if he went to college末but those plans never followed through.
After attending college for a year, Cass chose to drop out after he found out he knocked up his girlfriend. He shifted his part time job at liquor store to full time and scrounged up just enough money to rent a slummy apartment. There he lived with his girlfriend, Kathy, and their baby daughter, Hilah, for about two years until Kathy decided she had had enough of him. Cass, who had developed fond feelings for his little tot, was crushed when the court ruled custody in Kathy's favour.
Needless to say, Kathy quickly discovered that she had much better things to do than look after her daughter. Dragging Hilah over to Cass's for the night, or even a few days at a time, was not uncommon for her to do. Considering that he only expected to see Hilah one weekend enough, he was more than happy to take his daughter in. This was not a problem until Hilah was old enough to decide which parent she liked better; Cass became the 'good guy' and Kathy became the 'bad guy'. For Kathy, Hilah's preference for Cass was perceived as a crippling blow on her pride. Kathy liked to delude herself that she was a good mother, when in truth she neglected her daughter.
To divert Hilah's affection for Cass, she told her endless stories about her father was a liar, how he didn't pay his child support and that he was just trying to steal Hilah away from her. Although he did lie to his daughter, more often than not they were lies intended to protect her from the ugly truth of things. He was very faithful and indulgent in sending Kathy the child support money, even though he fancied he knew that Hilah only saw a few dollars of it. As for stealing away... that was in part as true as telling lies: over the years, Cass continually considered fighting for custody of Hilah.
More recently, Cass scrounged up enough money to pay for a cruise. He figured it would be a fun thing to do with his daughter, and when he first ran it by Kathy she was fine with it. But as she should have expected, the bitch changed her mind and refused to allow Hilah to go with. Hilah happened to be with him that weekend when it happened.
Cass had called Kathy up to find out what time she wanted Hilah home by the next day. Somehow the conversation took a nasty turn and Kathy hung up after telling him she was on her way to get Hilah that night. Furious and deeply disappointed, Cass chose to break the news to Hilah while he helped her pack末opening up his wallet and tucking the hundred-some dollars he had into the pouch of her favourite kangaroo stuffed animal. He made her promise not to show the money to her mother and that she would spend it on whatever she liked. Lots of tears, two rootbeers, Kathy's entrance, a brief fight, a tight hug and a slammed car door later and she was gone.
That left Cass with a sore heart and a paid ticket for a cruise that set sail in two weeks. The next day at the liquor store, his friend and neighbour Sofia Beckett stopped by. Since he could think of no other person he would rather go with, he asked her how she'd like tagging along on a cruise while he rung up her cheap wine. Unluckily for her, she said she'd 'love to!'
How did he/she get from the ship to the island?: See Sofia's application...
