About You
Name: Roy! Age: 17 Gender: Girl RP Sample: See Cass's app.
Your Character
Name: Emma Qiu-Shu Song (Song Qiu Shu) Age: 26 Gender: Female Income Tier: n/a; employee Profession: Executive Chef aboard the cruise ship Celebrity: Zhao Wei (Wei/Vicki Zhao)
Personality:
Emma is a person who is unshakably confident in her own arena. Oftentimes, her coworkers find her confidence, precision and perfectionism in the kitchen overwhelmingly frustrating. It isn't difficult to describe Emma as arrogant when she doesn't hesitate to tell somehow how to do something, why they should do it, the way she does it or how if something is done right that someone could never not like it.
Her peers also tend to describe her as a bit of a control freak: in her kitchen she demands order, timeliness and quality work from her fellow chefs. The kitchen and utensils must be spotless, cooking spaces organized and efficient. She reserves no forgiveness for mistakes made in her kitchen whatsoever, feeling that if they are professional enough to work in her kitchen, they are professional enough not to make mistakes. This obsession with order and neatness is usually confined to the kitchen unless Emma is stressed, upset or angry. A moodswing can lead her to organize and reorganize her room (or, when she lived in Los Angeles, her entire apartment).
Outside of the kitchen, Emma is still a relatively confident person but perceives herself as socially awkward. She finds it difficult to bond with people, and not because she is unpleasant or introverted, but because she cannot gauge whether or not people are interested, how to show she is interested, to infer from their tone what they are thinking/feeling, or what level conversation she needs to maintain.
This difficulty stems from her inability to bond completely with her family, namely her mother. Past and present, her way of making up for this short coming is by cooking or baking, sometimes for the person she can't connect with. Her mother discouraged and continues to discourage this habit, telling Emma that she shouldn't give someone something if she can't tell what they like. That, of course, led Emma to bake a something chocolatey to indulge her frustration away with.
Appearance:
![[image] [image]](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/_big_al/emmaflowers.gif)
Emma may have a tiny frame and figure, but she is not nearly so petite as most expect of an Asian woman. She stands at 5'5" and in the kitchen she makes the most of it, often seeming to tower imperiously over the other chefs while she works. Emma's body is also, for the most part, just fluff. Only her torso and arms have developed muscles, and that being because she is required to use them daily to haul heavy pots and guide hefty knives to do her precise and artful bidding.
To the Western eye, Emma is often described as attractive. Her mother, however, lamented that she inherited what she called her father's "large nose" even when most would call it daintily arched. Her features are also remarkably soft and youthful, her smile especially gentle; making her quietly and refreshingly attractive even at her most serious. Her eyes are a warm, chocolatey brown and her hair a rich, luxurious black with hints of red-brown rather than blue.
Since her early teens, Emma has been over-conscious of her feet. Her mother followed the traditional Chinese perception that women's feet should be small and elegant. When Emma was twelve and already wearing size sevens, Lily was appalled. Emma would listen silently to her mother say how she got her large feet and nose from her father, and that Tommy's nose and feet were just right. Thus, Emma has always perceived her feet as ugly, cumbersome and large and avoids wearing anything that exposes them.
History:
Emma was born in Spokane, Washington to Daniel Song and his wife, Lily Song. Daniel (Song Hong Chen) was a fourth generation Chinese-American, while Lily (Song-Xiang Liu Lan) was the first of her family to leave China.
Her parents met while Daniel was studying abroad with a genetic engineering research group several years ago; his Chinese was poor and limited to what his parents spoke at home and what they made him learn as a young child. Lily was the daughter of his host family and surprised him with her own limited knowledge of English, helping him confer his appreciation and interest with his host family and new acquaintances in China.
After three weeks, however, the research program ended and therefore meant that Daniel was to return to the United States. Half in love with Lily, he wrote down his address for her and she for him so that they could write to one another and hopefully keep in touch. Over the next four years, Daniel continually invited Lily to come to the United States and visit末something Lily always responded she wished she could do, but never gave a definite answer. Eventually, Daniel told her he was returning to China to visit her and her family, and that he planned on staying a month. A month was all Daniel needed to tell Lily that he was in love with her, to find out that she was in love with him, ask her to marry him and convince her to come back with him to the United States.
A year after Lily became a full-fledged citizen and married to Daniel, Emma was born. The couple lived in Spokane for two more years until relocating to Dallas. Daniel found good employment with a company in Dallas, but after four years, decided that the pay and the benefits he received were not of the calibre he deserved. Emma was 7 when they moved to Philadelphia suburb and when her younger brother, Tom (Song Jin Ling) was born.
As a child in elementary school, Emma made only one friend because she was exceedingly shy. The two would play together whenever they could, but what time wasn't spend with her friend was spent with her mother. Her mother constantly spoke Chinese with her and wanted her to learn, but the language never clicked in Emma's mind. She was surrounded by English outside of home, and inside it was spoken only when her father was present. Tommy, meanwhile, delighted his mother because he learned phrases and words of Chinese as a toddler with greater eagerness and aptitude than his older sister.
Perhaps because she failed to be able to communicate with her mother in one way, Emma developed an interest in food and a knack for cooking and baking simple things at an early age. Her way of impressing her mother was by coming home from her friend Becky's house and sharing with Lily the cookies they had made, or by copying down recipes to try to make at home. Initially, Lily was afraid that her little 'Qiu' was becoming too 'Western' and that she would grow up to hate her Chinese family末specifically her Chinese mother. So she smiled when Emma brought home recipes from Becky's, but shook her head and instead showed her daughter how to make traditional Chinese meals and treats.
By the time Emma was in her teens, her interest in cooking and baking had developed into a habit. Her taste for new, different kinds of food was insatiable末she would often expiriment with new types of food or new flavours. Emma's early dishes were met with skepticism by her family, until as a sophomore they recognized that their daughter's talent in the kitchen was well advanced to an art and a passion. When Emma decided that she would go to a culinary school instead of a regular college, Daniel and Lily accepted her decision, torn between being supportive and negative of their daughter's choice.
Emma went on from highschool to attend a culinary school in California, later finding employment at an upscale restaurant once she had two years' culinary expirience. Her talent kept her the job for the next five years, gradually helping her up the ranks in the kitchen. After completing her sixth year of culinary school, Emma was ready to begin her own restaurant: but lacked real monetary means to get her started. Disappointed, Emma moved back to Philadelphia to live with her family for a few months until she could find solid employment to get her by. To her surprise, she was contacted by (insert cruise line here) and after a brief interview and a dinner she prepared, she was hired as one of three resident executive chefs aboard the (insert cruise ship here).
How did he/she get from the ship to the island?:
Emma had gone out onto the floor to confront a wealthy European gentleman who had returned his dish to her kitchen for the third time with a different complaint each time. Upon the first return, she had blamed the chef in charge of the prep of the dish; but quickly realized that on the second dish's return that he was not to blame. Taking on the third dish personally, she had it brought out to the man, confident that even a picky diner such as he would be satisfied.
She was apologizing to the chef she had accused of making a mistake when the waitress returned with the untouched dish in hand and a new complaint. Furious, Emma marched out of the kitchen to demand in person what was wrong with her dish. They were just beginning a heated argument when the ship gave a sudden lurch.
Frightened, Emma did not know what to make of what happened next and ran with everyone else in a panic. She didn't return to the kitchen, which normally would have been an automatic place of comfort of her. Something about the image of knives and pots and pans being thrown and smashed about warned her away. Because this particular dining hall was two open stories (a bit like the ballroom, but considerably smaller), she went to huddle on the stairs and clung bodily onto the railing, eyes squeezed shut while dishes clattered and people were tossed about like ragdolls.
Emma was able to cling to the stairs for sometime until an abrupt impact of some sort shook her free and sent her tumbling down the stairs. Frantic, she flailed out with her arms and hands until she again got a hold of the railing. Bruised and terrified, it took her over an hour to feel safe enough to detach herself from the railing. Unlike in the ballroom, the dining hall had a substantial number of survivors.
Everyone in the kitchen, however, had perished末most to gruesome deaths. Before abandoning ship, Emma ventured into the kitchen to see what sort of state it was in. Luckily none of the burners had burst or set fire to the place. With chilled perserverance, she stepped over the dead bodies of her colleages and turned off the stoves and ovens, knowing that it would not do for the kitchen to be burned out.
She seized a bag and salvaged several items and utensils, especially foodstuffs she knew would last her and several other people a few days. Heavily laden with these things from the kitchen, she was helped off of the ship and to shore. Unfortunately, Emma had not planned ahead adequately, and some of the food and spices got too wet on the swim to shore to be worth consuming. Needless to say, she brought enough to be something, for a while末and there were still some things to be got on a second salvage mission末if anyone was up to it.
Have you read Filling Out Your Application?: You know I have! Who wrote it?: That girl I saw making out with Jensen Ackles..

She looks great. One question, though - what is her physical flaw?

Ahh. That her mother thinks she has a big nose and that she's not sculpted, model-thin? xD I'll try and come up with another one though.
